The S&M Challenger stem is a re-release of S&M’s legendary topload stem.
It was initially designed as a stronger alternative to race stems for riders tackling both tracks and trails.
Built in the USA from 6061 aluminum, this stem prioritizes strength over unnecessary machining, making it a solid and reliable option for riders who want maximum durability.
And if you need a bit of rise on your front end but not too much, this stem does the trick.
The classic design remains intact, featuring a knee-friendly rounded backside, deep chamfered edges, and a clean, minimalist look.
Even the branding is minimalist, which I like a lot.
With a machined Challenger logo on the faceplate (so cool!), this stem is a nod to BMX heritage while keeping things fresh for today’s riders.

1. Design & Build Quality
The S&M Challenger stem is CNC-machined from 6061 aluminum, ensuring a strong and sturdy build.
Unlike some modern stems that prioritize weight savings over toughness, this stem features minimal machining to maintain its durability.
Note: If you need a lighter top load, check out my S&M Race XLT stem review.
The stem’s rounded backside makes it knee-friendly, reducing painful impacts during aggressive riding.
Your knees will thank those rounded edges if you slip on your pedals or your chain breaks.
The clean, chamfered edges add to its refined look while keeping it functional and smooth.
With Grade 8 Allen bolt hardware, this stem withstands high torque and hard riding, ensuring that your bars stay locked in place without slipping.
2. Key Features
- CNC-machined 6061 aluminum: Maximum strength with no unnecessary weight reduction.
- Topload design: Provides extra height for better control and comfort.
- Rounded backside: Prevents knee injuries during heavy riding.
- Engraved Challenger logo: Adds a clean and classic aesthetic.
- Made in the USA: Precision craftsmanship from S&M.
- Grade 8 Allen bolt hardware: Ensures superior clamping power.
3. How It Rides
The S&M Challenger stem offers a sturdy, locked-in feel, making it ideal for riders who want a balanced front-end setup.
I’ve ridden this stem for three, if not more, years and loved it! I only switched because I wanted to try a higher rise.
The 24.8mm rise (upright) provides extra height, helping with manuals, jumps, and overall control.
But if you prefer a lower setup, the stem can also be inverted for a 6.7mm rise. In my opinion, it doesn’t look the best when upside down, but it’s possible, which is a big plus.
This stem is especially suited for trail and transition riders who need a strong and stable front end, but its classic geometry also makes it a great choice for street setups.
I mean, I rode it 80% for street and had zero issues with it.
The 49mm reach keeps the handling tight and responsive, making quick adjustments and precise moves feel natural. A shorter reach also makes barspins easier.
While the stem is only available in one length, it still provides a great balance of stability and responsiveness.
If you need more length options or a higher-rise stem, the S&M Enduro stem is a great alternative.
4. Real Rider Feedback

- “The rounded backside is a game-changer. No more knee bashing, and the classic design looks amazing.” – Bruce C.
- “Wish there were more reach options, but overall, this stem feels dialed and well-built.” – Jesse D.
