I’ve been riding the Cult Mind Control stem for a few months now, and so far, I’m REALLY into it.
Before this, I was running Cult’s Redemption top-load stem, which is a great stem too.
But I wanted to switch things up.
I hadn’t ridden a front-load stem in ages, and seeing some of my favorite riders, like Garrett Reynolds and Devon Smillie, still using front-load setups definitely pushed me in that direction.
The biggest reason I chose the Mind Control?
48mm reach. And lower rise.
I wanted something that would make my front end feel a bit more responsive and, hopefully, help my barspins come around faster.
And yes — I noticed the difference.
The bike feels a little more grounded, but in a GOOD way.
Responsive, controlled, and really nice for technical street riding.
So far, I’ve had zero bar slippage, zero loose bolts, zero creaking, and the stem still looks almost brand new.
Plus, I absolutely love the clean, aggressive look and that little “Mind Control” engraving on top.
For me, that detail is more than just branding.
It is a nice reminder that your mind is a powerful tool — on and off the bike.
But is the Cult Mind Control really one of the best 48mm front-load stems out there?

Cult Mind Control BMX Stem Review
1. Why I Switched From A Top Load To The Mind Control
I was rocking a top-load BMX stem for almost two decades.
Honestly, one of the biggest reasons for switching is because I wanted to try something new.
And because many of you know that I now ride a custom street-focused 22″ BMX bike, a front load just made that much more sense to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like a top-load, though.
But a front-load stem just started calling me back.
Plus, the more I looked at my favorite riders, the more I noticed how many are switching to a front load.
Not to mention, I really like how low and aggressive a BMX bike with a front load looks.
But the switch was not only about looks.
I also wanted a shorter reach and lower rise because I hoped it would make the bike feel quicker and help my barspins come around faster.
That is exactly what I noticed.
Immediately.
Compared with the Redemption, the front end now feels a little more grounded, but still responsive. Even though the Redemption stem also has a 48mm reach.
It is hard to describe perfectly, but the bike feels more controlled without feeling slow.
Also, a front-load puts you in a “more over the bar” position, which is also very advantageous for tailwhips.
And for the technical street riding I like, that is a combo I really enjoy.
So the switch from top-load to front-load was not because the Redemption was bad.
I simply wanted a lower, cleaner front end and a more responsive feel.
A few months in, I am very glad I made the change.

One thing worth clearing up is that the Mind Control does not use the anti-slip grooves found on Cult’s Redemption stem.
But so far, I have not had a single issue with the bars slipping. And I run a 10″ bar.

Back in the day, I didn’t really care about BMX stem geometry. I’m pretty sure many of you didn’t either.
However, it does matter. A lot actually.
And the 48mm reach is probably the biggest reason I like the Mind Control so much.
Compared with the Cult Redemption top load I was riding before, the front end now feels more responsive.
At the same time, the bike also feels a little more grounded.
That sounds like a weird combo, but it works really well for technical street riding.
Or maybe that’s just how I feel it?
The biggest difference I notice is with barspins.
They come around faster.
The shorter reach seems to help the bars snap through the rotation a little quicker, which is exactly what I hoped for when I switched stems.
I would not say a 48mm stem will suddenly fix your barspins.
But if you already do them and want a quicker-feeling front end, a shorter stem does make barspins easier.
For my riding, 48mm feels really good.
That said, I would LOVE to see Cult offer a 46mm version too. Or maybe that would be just too much?
Anyway, I would absolutely try it.
But a 50mm option would also be nice for riders who want a little more room.

So far, this is one of the things I’m most impressed with.
My bars have not slipped once.
And that includes sketchy landings and a few nose-heavy hits where I came down hard on the front end.
The bolts have also stayed exactly where they should.
No loosening.
No constant retightening.
No weird creaks or clicks.
That gives me a lot of confidence in the stem because I really do not want to think about my bars moving when I am riding street.
One important detail:
The Mind Control does not have the anti-slip grooves that Cult uses on some of their other stems.
I noticed that right away because I came directly from the Redemption.
But in actual riding, it has not mattered at all for me.
The clamp still holds the bars perfectly.
And tightening the faceplate evenly is easy, so setup feels straightforward and solid.
After a few months, the stem still feels basically the same as it did on day one.
And I did not need to retighten the bolts yet.

Installation was super straightforward.
The Mind Control fit perfectly with my S&M Widemouth fork, and I did not run into any annoying clearance or alignment issues.
The faceplate is easy to tighten evenly, and getting the bars into the exact position I wanted was simple.
I also really like the recessed compression area.
It keeps the top cap cleaner and makes the whole front end look more tucked in and finished.
No awkward gaps.
No fiddly setup.
No weird fitment issues.
Everything just went together the way it should. Epic.
And that’s not always the case. Because some fork top caps don’t fit the stem’s recessed area. But that’s usually the case if the stem is from one brand and the fork from another.
However, Cult and S&M work together nicely. (I never expected I would actually say this. 🙂 )
For me, that is exactly what I want from a BMX stem.
Install it, set the bars, tighten everything properly, and go shred.

Yes, I care about the look of my bike – A LOT!
So this is one of my favorite things about the Mind Control.
The front-load shape makes the bike look lower, cleaner, and more aggressive, which is exactly the look I wanted when I moved away from the Redemption.
I also really like how the recessed compression area cleans up the top of the stem.
It gives the whole front end a more finished, minimalistic look.
Then there is the small “Mind Control” engraving on top.
That detail is probably my favorite part.
It is subtle, but I notice it every time I look down at the bike.
And for me, it is more than just branding.
It is a nice reminder that your mind is a powerful tool.
Note: It also matches perfectly with my Cult headset, whose dust cap has engraved “Maintain Everyday” – and that’s exactly what you should do with your mind.
The Mind Control’s finish has also held up extremely well so far.
After all this time riding it, mine still looks almost brand new.
If Cult ever updated this stem, the only visual change I would make would be to hide the two steerer-clamp bolts a little more.
But that would mean adding a little more material, which would translate into a slightly heavier stem.
Still, it’s almost perfect and not many really care about this detail, so I’m not really sure if it’s worth the time and money.
Other than that, I think the Mind Control is one of the cleanest-looking BMX stems out there right now.

- 48mm reach: This is probably my favorite performance detail. The front end feels more responsive, and my barspins come around faster.

8. Cult Mind Control Stem Cons
I honestly do not have any major complaints with the Mind Control so far.
But if I had to point out a few things, these would be it:
- Only one reach option: The 48mm reach works great for me, but I would LOVE to see Cult offer a 46mm and 50mm version too.
- Not ideal if you want a taller front end: Because it is a front-load stem with a low setup, riders who prefer more front-end height will probably be better off with a top load.
- Probably not the best match for every riding style: I think it suits technical street really well, but park, transition, and faster riders may prefer a different stem setup.
- No anti-slip grooves: I would still like to see Cult add them for a little extra reassurance.
9. Who Should Get The Cult Mind Control Stem?
- Technical street riders: This is where I think the Mind Control fits best. The 48mm reach feels quick and responsive without making the bike feel nervous.
- Riders who do a lot of barspins: The shorter reach helps my bars come around faster.
- Anyone who prefers a lower front end: If you like that flatter, more aggressive front-load feel, the Mind Control is a really nice match.
- Riders who care about a clean setup: The recessed compression area and simple shape give the front end a very tidy look.
- Riders who want solid bar hold: Mine has not slipped once so far, even after sketchy and nose-heavy landings.
- Riders who like simple, proven parts: There is nothing overly complicated here. It just feels solid, clean, and dependable.
- Riders who value style as much as function: The aggressive front-load look and small “Mind Control” engraving are a big part of why I like this stem so much.
10. Cult Mind Control Stem Alternatives
- Odyssey CFL3: A strong 50mm front-load alternative with a clean shape and a bit more reach than the Mind Control.
- Cinema Projector: A stylish front-load stem with a different design approach if you want something less traditional.
- Kink Track: Another solid 50mm front-load option with a simple, no-nonsense setup for street riding.
- S&M Shredneck: A classic front-load stem with old-school BMX roots and a very distinctive look.
Conclusion: Is The Cult Mind Control Stem Worth $70?
Yes, the Cult Mind Control stem is absolutely worth $70.
I have been riding mine for a few months now, and so far it has done exactly what I wanted.
The 48mm reach makes the front end feel quicker and helps me with barspins.
At the same time, the bike still feels grounded and controlled, which I really like.
Reliability has also been excellent.
My bars have not slipped once; the bolts have stayed tight; there are no creaks or clicks; and the finish still looks almost brand new.
Moreover, the low front-load shape, recessed compression area, and “Mind Control” engraving make this one of the cleanest stems I have had on my bike.
Would I change anything?
Maybe add anti-slip grooves and offer a 46mm version.
But those are small things.
If mine broke tomorrow, I would buy the exact same stem again.
That’s why the Cult Mind Control is an easy recommendation.
