The Fairdale Taj 27.5″ is one of those bikes that does not fit neatly into one box.
It has big 27.5″ wheels, but it is not trying to be a mountain bike.
It is comfortable enough for cruising, but it is definitely not just a laid-back cruiser either.
At its core, the Taj still has a lot of BMX DNA.
You get a full chromoly frame and fork, BMX-style bars and stem, 3-piece cranks, a single-speed drivetrain, and a setup that clearly wants you to do more than simply pedal from A to B.
That is what makes this bike interesting to me. And the most important part is that it’s NOT boring.
The larger wheels add stability and make it easier to cover distance, but that’s not all.
We can still talk about bunny hops, manuals, pump tracks, curbs, and simply messing around on it.
That’s probably the best way to describe the Taj.
It is a bigger bike for riders who still want to ride like BMX riders.
Of course, the Taj will not be as easy to throw around as a 20″ or 22″ BMX, and that matters if tricks are your main priority.
However, I’m pretty sure you’re not here for the big tricks.
You’re here because you want something more comfortable for cruising without completely giving up the playful side of BMX.

Fairdale Taj 27.5″ Bike Review
1. My Favorite Features Of The Fairdale Taj 27.5″
There is a lot to like here, but a few things stand out right away for me.
The full chromoly frame and fork are probably at the top of my list. That gives the Taj a proper BMX-style foundation instead of making it feel like a generic cruiser with BMX bars slapped on. Plus, it makes it strong AF.
I also really like the 27.5″ wheel size.
It gives you more stability, rolls over rougher pavement and small trail chatter more easily, and makes cruising comfier without pushing the bike all the way into 29″ territory.
The cockpit is another strong point.
You get Fairdale MX-6 chromoly bars with a Sunday Freeze 48mm top-load stem, which keeps the front end looking and feeling familiar to BMX riders.
Then there is the simple drivetrain.
The Taj uses 175mm 3-piece chromoly cranks, a 28T chainring, and a 14T freewheel. No gears to think about. No extra clutter.
Just pedal and go.
I also like that Fairdale did not cheap out on the rolling setup.
You get double-wall 36H aluminum rims, sealed-bearing hubs, and Maxxis Ardent Race 27.5 x 2.2″ tires.
That tire choice is especially interesting because it helps keep the bike useful beyond smooth pavement.
Dirt paths, rough bike paths, light trails, pump tracks — the Taj is clearly built to handle more than one type of surface.
And finally, the overall setup just feels well thought out.
The Taj is not trying to be the fastest commuter, the lightest BMX, or the most capable trail bike.
It is trying to be fun almost everywhere.
That is probably my favorite thing about it.

The numbers show that the Taj is more relaxed and stable than a regular 20″ BMX, but it still keeps enough BMX character to stay fun.
The 71° head tube angle, longer 42″ wheelbase, and 2.2″ bottom bracket drop all point toward a calmer, more planted ride.
That should help when cruising, carrying speed, and riding rougher ground.
At the same time, the 23″ top tube length and relatively compact 34mm fork offset help keep the front end from feeling too slow or lazy.
Taj is built to give you more stability and comfort from the 27.5″ wheels without completely killing the playful side.
Handlebar Geometry
- Clamp: 7/8″ (22mm)

- Backsweep: 12°
- Upsweep: 2°
That 6.25″ rise and 28″ width help keep the Taj’s front end much more BMX-like than a typical cruiser setup.
The 12° backsweep should also help with comfort when cruising, while the 2° upsweep keeps the bar from feeling overly relaxed.
Honestly, I would expect that the bar would come slightly wider, at around 30″.
But don’t get me wrong, 28″ feels extremely comfortable. I also ride this width on my 22″ BMX bike.

This is where the Taj gets interesting..
Compared with a 20″, 22″, or even 26″ BMX, the 27.5″ wheels make it less snappy and less easy to throw around. Expected.

You have more wheel to move, more wheelbase, and a much calmer overall geometry.
So no, it is not going to feel like a giant 20″ BMX.
But that does not mean it is boring. Far from it.
Jumping curbs, shredding pump tracks, doing manuals, even 180s, and simply messing around all feel super fun.
Moreover, the bigger wheels also bring a few advantages.
They carry speed better, smooth out rough pavement, and make the bike feel more stable when you are cruising or riding light trails.
That stability can actually make the Taj more fun in a different way.
You can still hop things, lift the front end, and play around, but the bike feels less twitchy and more composed underneath you.
The tradeoff is rotation.
A smaller BMX will still be easier for things like 180s, quick direction changes, and more technical trick riding.
So yes, 180s feel harder than on a 20″, but they are still doable.
So I would look at it like this:
If your priority is tricks first, a smaller BMX still wins.
But if you want a bike that can cruise farther, handle rougher ground, hit a pump track, and still let you mess around on curbs and small jumps, the Taj strikes a really nice balance.
In short, it’s a very solid BMX dad bike to cruise around with your kid!

This is where the 27.5″ wheels really start to earn their place.
Compared with a smaller BMX, the Taj feels noticeably calmer and easier to ride when you are just covering ground.
The longer wheelbase and the relaxed frame geometry all help give the bike a more planted, stable ride.
That matters on longer cruises.
You are not constantly fighting a twitchy front end, and the bigger wheels roll over rough pavement, cracks, and uneven paths much more effortlessly.
Of course, the Maxxis Ardent Racetires help here, too.
They offer enough volume for comfort and control while still keeping the bike useful on dirt paths and light trails.
Note: If you’ll be mainly riding street, the tires will likely wear out faster. In that case, I would replace them with slicker ones. (Check my recommendation below.)
I’ve talked to a bunch of Taj bike owners who said it’s comfortable and easy to cruise on.
But remember, I would not call it a long-distance touring bike. Because it’s not.
There’s more.
The single-speed 28/14 gearing keeps things simple and fun, but riders in very hilly areas may find it limiting.
And if you spend a lot of time sitting and pedaling, the stock saddle may be one of the first things you want to personalize.
For flatter routes, city cruising, bike paths, and riding between spots (I even saw a few skateboarders ride it!), though, the Taj is a very good middle ground.

6. What Actual Riders Like About The Fairdale Taj
- It still feels playful: Owners regularly mention bunny hops, manuals, curbs, pump tracks, and small jumps.
- The 27.5″ wheels add stability: Riders like how calm and composed the bike feels compared with smaller BMX bikes, especially when carrying speed or cruising over rougher ground.
- It rolls well on mixed surfaces: The Taj gets praise for working beyond smooth pavement. Riders use it on bike paths, dirt sections, pump tracks, and light trails.
- It is comfortable for cruising: Several owners highlight that the Taj is easier to pedal around on than a 20″ BMX (even with a long seat post), especially for longer casual rides.

One thing I like about the Taj is that you can leave it stock and have fun, but it also gives you plenty of room to tune the bike around how you actually ride.
The most common upgrades are:
- Taller bars: Some riders go taller for a more upright position or a stronger BMX-style cockpit feel.
- Different saddle: This is one of the first changes riders make if they spend more time sitting and cruising.
- Street-oriented tires: If you ride mostly pavement, swapping the stock Maxxis Ardent Race tires for something faster-rolling can make the bike feel quicker and smoother. The Schwalbe Big Ben Plus tires are perfect for this.
- Different gearing: Some owners change the gearing for more top speed or easier pedaling, depending on terrain and how much cruising they do.
- Seatpost setup: A taller or easier-to-adjust seatpost can help if you regularly switch between seated pedaling and BMX-style riding.
- Freewheel: A few riders have replaced the stock freewheel, either because of noise or simply because they wanted a different gearing setup.
I wouldn’t rush to change anything right away.
Ride the Taj first and figure out what actually bothers you.
That is the better way to upgrade this bike because the stock setup already covers a lot of ground.

9. Fairdale Taj 27.5″ Cons

That’s where this bike SHINES.

Moreover, the bigger 27.5″ wheels, longer wheelbase, and relaxed frame geo make cruising comfier.
For me, that balance is the whole point of the Taj.
It is not as quick or tossable as a 20″BMX, and it is not trying to be a proper mountain bike either.
It sits right in the middle.
And if that is exactly what you want, it makes a lot of sense.
I would look at the Taj if you want one bike for cruising, messing around, and everyday fun without giving up that BMX-style simplicity.
If tricks come first, go smaller.
If comfort and distance come first, a more traditional cruiser may suit you better.
But if you want something in between that still makes you want to hop every curb on the way home with a big smile on your face, the Fairdale Taj 27.5″ is a very cool choice.
